Update: MP calls for review of sentencing in child abuse case

Hemel Hempstead’s MP has pledged to contact the Attorney General to request that the sentence of a man, whose abuse of a baby girl has left her brain damaged, be reviewed.

Grzegorze Lis, 35, who broke both the child’s legs, fractured her skull and bit her, was jailed for 10 years and nine months last Monday.

But MP Mike Penning does not believe the length of time Lis will actually spend behind bars is enough.

The baby, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was also left blind, deaf and incontinent by the horrific abuse, which took place when she was just eight weeks old.

Mr Penning will also ask that the sentence handed down to Lis’s partner Joanna Skrodzka, who failed to get medical help for the youngster, be looked at again. The 22-year-old was jailed on Friday at St Albans Crown Court, having earlier been found guilty by a jury, for two years and nine months for child cruelty.

Lis, who shared a flat in The Maltings, Hemel Hempstead, with Skrodzka, was sent to prison for two offences of inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent and causing actual bodily harm.

The Attorney General has the power to ask the Court of Appeal to review some sentences which he thinks are ‘unduly lenient’.
