Tring reporter and snapper among runners at this year's Aldbury race

A Gazette reporter and photographer were among the 110 finishers in this year's Aldbury Cross Country Challenge.

Tring reporter Jonathan Saunders and snapper David Satchel finished in 108th (66:58) and 87th (53:13) respectively in the sunshine on Sunday.

It was 22-year-old Jonathan's first foray on the five mile run.

"After appearing last time stuffing my face in The Gazette, it's nice to show I have done some exercise," said Jonathan, who launched our Dacorum's Best Chip Shop competition in February.

"It's good to show readers I'm not just all about eating chips!"

David Satchel, 67, has now completed the race 17 times.

He added: "There were top athletes at the front being competitive but mostly people were there to have fun.

"They seem to tilt the hills up a little bit every year!"

Coming in first place in the village race was Ross Langley (33:09), representing Tring Running Club (TRC).

Club mates Gregory Callaghan (36:12, sixth), Simon Barnett (36:35, seventh) and Chris Egan (36:52, ninth) all finished in the top 10.

Dacorum and Tring AC's Lee Copeland came 16th (38:22) and the first female home was Alton Runners' Julie Humphries, who was 21st in 39:26.

DTAC runner Sarah Needleman was next in 39th (42:41) with club mates Ian Stone (42:52, 40th) and Louise Berry (43:00 41st) finishing seconds later.

Each runner received an award on crossing the finishing line.

The run was just one of a number of courses TRC members have finished of late.

Putting the race into perspective were Tom Griffin (second in the M60 race, 7:37:17, 60th overall) and Dave Sawyer (M40, 8:25:12, 76th) who were two of 105 finishers in the 40 mile race at the Compton Downland Challenge on April 3.

Of the 195 runners finishing the 20 mile race in Berkshire were Tony Hill (M60, 3:41:25, 120th) and Tom Sawyer (M18, 4:13:49, 158th).

Last Sunday saw Michaela Colwell (LV35, 1.14.07) and Richard White (M50, 1.18.31) complete the Sandy 10m finishing 139th and 207th out of 524 runners.
