Peter and Violet Higginson, of Tring, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

A couple who met on the factory floor of Tring’s Old Silk Mill have celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary.

Peter and Violet Higginson, of Nathaniel Walk in the town, received dozens of cards from family and friends – including one from the Queen, a royal tradition.

The couple were married at St Peter and St Paul’s Church on November 28 in 1953 and went on to have two daughters, Carol Nutkins and Pam Fryer.

Today, former engineer Peter, 84, and 82 year old Violet – better known as Vi – have five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, the latest addition to the family arriving just nine weeks ago.

They celebrated their milestone anniversary, which fell on a Thursday, with a weekend family party at their home. On the day itself the diamond couple had lots of visits from friends bearing cards of congratulations.

The happy pair met while working for major Tring employer RMR Engineering in Brook Street.

Peter, who was born and bred in the town, said the secret to a long and happy marriage is “love and trusting each other. You must trust, otherwise it is a waste of time.”

Hemel Hempstead-born Violet, who has lived in Tring for most of her life, added: “A lot of give and take. I wouldn’t change it for anything, even though he is a devil sometimes.”

The pair thanked their family and friends for the many cards and gifts that they have received.

Daughter Carol said: “They are great family people. They are very lucky because most of their family live locally.”
