Top hockey player retires as England captain

A top hockey player, who has travelled around the world with the sport, has retired as captain of the England Great Grand Masters team.

David Wright - a long-term member of Tring Hockey Club - will continue to play the sport.

To mark his retirement from the top post, 70-year-old Mr Wright was presented with a silver salver by his England team mates during a dinner.

He was captain of the over 65s team from 2003 to 2008.

During this time they held an impressive winning record and bagged the world championship title in 2006.

The team was also European champions under Mr Wright's captaincy from 2004 to 2008.

The hockey player grew up in Aldbury and first became interested in the sport while a pupil at Tring School.

Still working as a consultant, active Mr Wright, of Slapton in Bucks, trains three to four times a week to keep fit.

During a lifetime of playing the sport he has won many gold, silver and bronze medals at both world and European level.
