A ‘talented, but troubled’ man deliberately ended his life while depressed, an inquest heard.

Michael Alan Hughes, 51, died as he jumped in front of a train at Hemel Hempstead railway station on March 16 last year.

His widow Elena travelled from Michael’s Dublin home to attend the inquest on Wednesday.

Coroner Edward Thomas said IT developer Michael was discharged from hospital in Ireland days before, after he was found atop the cliffs of Moher.

Michael then flew to London and checked in at a hotel, paying until March 24. He had planned to resume work on March 26.

A toxicology report came back negative, but Michael was reportedly suffering complex, deep-rooted depression.

Addressing Elena, Mr Thomas said: “This deliberate act was a tragedy for Michael, for you, and for the train driver. My sympathies go to all of you.”

At the time of Michael’s death, a police photographer was criticised for insensitive Facebook posts when his train was delayed.
