Teen makes National Theatre

A teenager has beaten thousands to win a place at a prestigious stage school that launched the career of Dame Helen Mirren.

Ashlyns School sixth-former, 17 year-old Lottie Rugg-Easey, was one of only a small number of hopefuls to be accepted into the National Youth Theatre summer school.

The drama student, of Tresco Road, in Berkhamsted said: “I am really looking forward to the chance to work with a professional director and the opportunity to focus on something that I am passionate about.

“I am so proud of my accomplishment and I intend to get the most out of the experience, which will help me to develop as an actor.”

The organisation is a registered charity that offers a summer school for people interested in the dramatic arts.

It has helped launch the careers of many well known actors such as Daniel Craig and Orlando Bloom.

Lottie added: “I know I can succeed as an actor, the Youth Theatre placement is just the first step.

“The audition was really nerve wracking. I’d chosen a speech from a play by Stephen Poliakoff. Once I had finished, the director asked me to do it again, but this time running around the room shouting at the top of my voice.”

The rising star first became interested in theatre at the age of ten after watching A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Open Air Theatre in Regents Park.

The National Youth Theatre is a registered charity, so Lottie will need to raise 600 to pay for the course and students are encouraged not to take handouts form their parents.
