A five-a-side community football tournament held last Saturday has been hailed as a success by its organisers.

The competition was held by the Dacorum Neighbourhood Police Team at Cavendish School, with the aim of building bridges between different parts of the community.

Groups including the council's Antisocial Behaviour Team, Druglink and Connexions were all on hand to give advice to both spectators and participants.

Nine teams took part in the adult tournament, including teams from the police, Dacorum Borough Council, the Dacorum Mosque and the Muslim Welfare Association.

A Dacorum Ambulance team also took part, and won in the final beating the Muslim Welfare Association 2-1 with the last kick of the game.

PC Nik Pringle, one of the organisers of the event, said: "These are partners that we need to build positive links with if we are to carry on our function of policing all aspects of our communities. This was an excellent way in which to forge these links."

The youth tournament featured eight teams of 14 to 15 year olds from schools around the borough, and was won by Kings Langley Rudolph Steiner School, beating home side Cavendish School 1-0 in the final.

Officiating on the day was an adult referee and three referees from Cavendish School who had taken advantage of the school's Sports College status.

PC Pringle said: "It shows a lot for their competence that despite some 35 games being played throughout the day no yellow or red cards needed to be issued."

The day, which was funded by Hertfordshire Constabulary, the PCSO initiative fund and the Dacorum Schools Partnership, will become an annual event.

PC Pringle added: "We are already starting to plan next year's event which we hope to be bigger and better than this year and will actively look at putting on similar sporting events for other sports as well."
