Ukes for Unicef 2013 ukulele festival in Berkhamsted.

The second fundraising Ukes For Unicef ukulele festival was held at Berkhamsted Civic Centre on Saturday.

Last year the event raised £2,500 for international children’s charity Unicef, but collections during the 2013 music extravaganza have yet to be counted.

The festival featured the likes of Brian Ashley, former rhythm guitarist in hit 60s band The Jynx, playing with the Berkhamsted Ukulele Random Players (BURP).

Also playing was Bishop’s Stortford three-piece ukulele band The Fog, whose members have performed in various bands dating back to the 60s.

But the group that got perhaps the biggest cheer during the event was Berkhamsted’s Swing Gate School Ukulele Band.

Member Theo Grange, aged eight, said: “It went very well.

“I thought some of the tunes were actually too loud and it hurt my ears.

“But I had a very good time and all my friends did as well.”

Band members, all in Year 3 of the school, have been learning the ukulele since September.

Teaching assistant Jan Montague said: “The children were a bit nervous about getting up on stage in front of a big audience.

“But once they were up there playing, they thoroughly enjoyed it and got a rapturous reception from a very packed and enthusiastic audience.”
