Sports and arts centre will 'put Hemel on the map'

'World class' facilities for young people could put Hemel Hempstead on the map.

A major development offering extreme sports, music and media opportunities to teens has been given the green light by planning bosses.

The multimillion-pound scheme will be built at Jarman Park and allow youngsters to socialise and showcase their talents.

Its indoor BMX and skate park alone is expected to lure people from across the country and developers predict the centre will welcome 100,000 visitors a year.

Dacorum Sports Trust (DST) is developing the project with Youth Connexions Hertfordshire thanks to a 5million government grant.

The centre, split into three main 'zones', is aimed primarily at young people but will be open to all ages.

It will boast climbing areas, a dance studio, caving complex and high ropes, recording studio, performance room, drum booth, and film and media suite.

The vast complex will also have an information area, counselling rooms, social and office space, a cafe and retail outlets.

Counsellors on Dacorum Borough Council's planning committee approved the plans when they met on Thursday, December 10.

Work is due to begin on the development next summer with a provisional opening date of September 2011.
