Firefighters are still working to contain a blaze that has been raging for almost a week and there is still no end in sight.

Two crews - one from Hemel Hempstead and another from Potters Bar - are currently at the recycling centre in Appspond Lane, Potters Couch.

The fire, on the border of Hemel Hempstead and St Albans, started within a huge pile of wood and has been going since Saturday night.

It is so big that instead of attempting to battle the flames firefighters are working to contain the fire and have their fingers crossed for rain this weekend.

Herts Fire and Rescue Service spokesman David Henning said: “It is still going quite considerably. If we get some rain this weekend then it might help it a bit.”

He said it is too early to say how much longer the fire will go on for.

At its height more than seven fire crews were tackling the blaze, which can be seen from the M1 motorway and has caused road closures and water shortages for those living nearby.
