SOAP star Katherine Kelly, who played outspoken Becky MacDonald in Coronation Street, visited the Hospice of St Francis to do some surprise filming for ITV’s This Morning.

The actress made patient Terry Sanderson’s day when she took time to sit down and speak to the avid soap fan. She also spoke to senior sister Jenny Burrell and interviewed hospice medical director Dr Ros Taylor for TV.

Katherine was there to highlight the mammoth efforts of Kings Langley runner Matthew Loody who completed 100 marathons in 100 days to raise cash for the good cause. It will be part of a feature at the end of this month to honour and recognise unsung heroes.

While at the Northchurch-based hospice, Katherine sported the charity’s Midnight Walk pink t-shirt and encouraged people to take part in the sponsored 11 or five mile walk. The event will be officially started by Matthew who will be joined by supporters Bianca and Sheryl Gascoigne.

Katherine said; “I come from a nursing background so care for people who are very seriously ill has always been a part of my life and the work the team do at the hospice here is inspirational. I wish I could come along and take part and I am sure it will be a fantastic event. I cannot believe all the care given here is given for free.”

The walk takes place on Saturday, June 30 and will see fundraisers travel from Hemel Hempstead School to Berkhamsted and back again.

Among the crowds will be the Gazette’s deputy editor Wes Smith along with a team of advertising ladies. You can sponsor him at www.justgiving.com/wesGazette
