Shopkeepers warned over rats and fire
Fire safety experts have warned shopkeepers in Hemel Hempstead to clear rubbish from the back of stores to stop rats and arson attacks.
According to fire safety officers from Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, food waste, packaging and storage crates left at the rear of shops can all lead to pest infestations and blazes.
Jack Daw, Community Safety Co-ordinator for Dacorum, said: "We want shopkeepers to contain their rubbish properly and not let it build up.
"People should also keep rear exits free."
He added: "We will be doing regular inspections over the coming months."
On July 23, firefighters were called to Co-op in Long Chaulden, Hemel Hempstead after a fire which started in a refrigeration unit spread to rubbish left at the back of the shop.
The incident came just more than a week after a shop owned by 99p Stores Ltd backing on to Waterhouse Street, Hemel Hempstead was hit by fire in a suspected arson attack.
That blaze on July 15 involved piles of boxes and pallets left at the back of the building.
