‘Self-harm sites ought to be taken off internet’

The mother of a 25-year-old who committed suicide says telling people how to kill themselves should not be published on the internet.

Julie Naunton raised her concerns during the inquest into the death of her son Martyn, who had researched how to take his own life before committing suicide at his home in Nightingale Walk, Hemel Hempstead on Saturday, April 14.

An inquest, held last Wednesday, heard how the young business owner was found by his flatmate lying on a bed with a bag over his head and next to two large helium tanks.

His parents saw on his internet history that he had learnt the suicide method through the web.

Mrs Naunton said: “How to kill yourself shouldn’t be on the internet and I wish I could stop it happening to anyone else.”

Mr Naunton, who had ADHD and depression, started treatment with the North West Herts mental crisis team in February.

He chose to stay in the community rather than go to hospital to keep his condition private but on February 20 he agreed to go to hospital after admitting that he was planning to kill himself. He was discharged eight days later.

Crisis team leader Mr Tondeneh said: “He [Martyn] was sometimes depressed and suicidal and other times he appeared to cope with things.”

Coroner Graham Danbury recorded that Mr Naunton took his own life while suffering with stress and depression.

Following the inquest, Hemel Hempstead MP Mike Penning plans to contact the home secretary about helium use in suicide to discuss ways this could be deterred. It comes after the Gazette reported last week that Derek Dallison who used the same method to end his life.
