School flooded in second indoor deluge in less than 12 hours
Two classrooms were flooded by up to six inches of water after heavy rainfall overnight.
It was the second indoor deluge reported to Hemel Hempstead Fire Station in less than 12 hours.
Two engines rushed to the scene in George Street Primary School, Hemel Hempstead, at about 8.45am today (Thursday). They are still there, helping to pump out rainwater.
Headteacher Debra Lamb said: “Due to the heavy rain last night, the water has come through, but the school is running as normal.”
Classes have been moved to the school hall and ICT room to cope with the problem, but Miss Lamb said these changes are common practice.
Miss Lamb said: “It’s just normal school life and things that we deal with every day. This is not a huge issue for us.”
But she conceded that the school has never been flooded before in the four years she has been a headteacher there.
The incident was the second flood reported in Hemel Hempstead in less than 12 hours.
At about 9pm last night (Wednesday), a fire engine rushed to a Fisheries Road home to pump out rainwater that had seeped into it. They had left the scene by 10.10pm.
Herts County Council spokesman David Henning later said: “Following investigative work it has been established that the problems at George Street Primary were due to blocked downpipes. These are now being cleared and electrical safety ensured.”
