SAPPI WORKERS AGREE REDUNDANCY DEAL

Friday March 31. The last major paper mill in Hemel Hempstead will cease production in May after workers accepted a redundancy package, union sources have revealed.

Sappi Nash Mills, in Lower Road, has agreed to pay 137 employees a total of three weeks redundancy pay for each year of service.

Government guidelines for redundancy packages are for a week's pay per year of service for anyone aged between 22 and 41 rising to a week and a half's pay per year of service for anyone aged 41 and over.

Sappi will also provide help retraining staff and finding them new work.

Amicus officer Geoff Usher said that although workers were unhappy to lose their jobs they were pleased to secure a good redundancy deal.

He added that the production side of the business would begin winding up on May 5 leaving 24 employees to run a warehouse operation from the site.

A spokesman for Sappi was unavailable for comment.
