Santa was drafted in to help launch this year’s Salvation Army Christmas Toy Appeal.

People are being asked to give generously to ensure families facing tough times enjoy a jolly festive season.

The Hemel Hempstead appeal is running in partnership with Superdrug in Marlowes, which is collecting donations of unwrapped presents on behalf of the charity.

Tim Johnson, from the Salvation Army in Waterhouse Street, said: “The Hemel Hempstead general public are hugely generous and we thank them for times past and invite them to show their generosity again.”

The gifts are distributed to mums and dads in the area who are struggling financially to ensure their children receive gifts.

One of the hardest groups to cater for each year is teenagers so Mr Johnson is asking donors to be imaginative.

“All presents for all ages are appreciated,” he added.

Last year the appeal saw donated presents bring smiles to the faces of more than 70 children.

The Salvation Army is also asking for help to ensure its Christmas day dinner for the old, cold and lonely is a festive hit.

Volunteer drivers are needed to take people to and from the get together and helpers are also required to deliver meals to homes.

Helpers will pick up meals from 11.30am for delivery and drivers will be needed for pick-ups at midday and drop-offs at around 3.30pm.
