Russell Brand visits Mount prison for drugs documentary
A drug rehabilitation programme on offer at Bovingdon’s Mount prison was held up as a success story for helping inmates stay clean by comedian Russell Brand.
The celebrity visited the prison as part of a BBC3 documentary looking at the different treatments on offer to addicts.
Brand, who used heroin during his 20s, champions rehabilitation based on abstinence and wants the government to plough cash into offering rehabilitation programmes rather than prescribing methadone to users.
As part of the television show, called Russell Brand: From Addiction to Recovery, the star found out about the prison’s RAPt (the Rehabilitation for Addicted Prisoners Trust) drug treatment unit.
During the documentary, aired last Thursday, Brand spoke to those running the abstinence course and inmates who are battling addiction.
