Rambow revisited in teen movie

School pupils who starred as extras in a new British film saw themselves shine on the silver screen in Berkhamsted.

The students, who helped film Son of Rambow at Ashlyns School in 2006, were invited to a special preview screening at The Rex in High Street – a building which also stars in the finished flick.

And at the movie event on Friday (March 14), the creators of the new film praised both the pupils and the town for helping to bring their 1980s-inspired coming-of-age comedy to life.

Director Garth Jennings said: "When we started out making Son of Rambow we were really trying to find somewhere that looked as spectacular as we remember our childhoods being."

Producer Nick Goldsmith added: "We found almost 70 per cent of our other locations in Berkhamsted."

Son of Rambow tells the story of two schoolboys who, during a hot summer term in the 1980s, try to film a remake of Rambo: First Blood.

Dozens of scenes from the movie were shot in and around Ashlyns School off Chesham Road, with its pupils and students from nearby Tring School appearing as extras.

After The Rex screening, Ashlyns student and extra Rebekah Wilson, 16, said: "Seeing yourself on the screen is so exciting and we got paid too, which was a bonus."

As well as Ashlyns School, Son of Rambow features a house in Castle Hill, the inside and outside of The Rex cinema, and several locations on the Ashridge Estate.

The movie was made on a 'shoestring' budget of 4million but after winning over critics at America's top independent film festival it was snapped up by Paramount Vantage in a worldwide distribution deal.

Son of Rambow hits cinemas across the country on April 4.
