Protests, but lights will shine until 10pm

A school in Hemel Hempstead has been granted permission to use floodlights until 10pm despite concerns from neighbours about noise and disturbance.

Cavendish School in Warners End Road already has permission to use its floodlit astroturf pitch until 9pm but wants to extend this due to ‘demand from the local community’, a meeting of Dacorum Borough Council’s development control committee was told.

One member of the public told councillors: “I live opposite the pitch. For years we’ve had to put up with noise from footballers using the pitch until 9pm Monday to Friday.

“The sound carries and sometimes it’s as if they’re in the front garden. Extending the time to 10pm is unacceptable.

“We have been very patient up until now but this is too much.”

Councillor Janice Marshall told the meeting: “Why should residents have to endure that level of noise every week night until 10pm?”

But colleagues did not agree.

Councillor Allan Lawson said: “This is the Olympic year. It would be very sad if we didn’t support it.”

Councillor Graham Sutton said: “I am sure if there’s any undue noise it will be reported back to environmental health.”

Councillor Roger Taylor said: “There is no record of complaints. The strength of the lights has been reduced by a third.”

The committee agreed the extension until next August and it will be evaluated in March.
