Promised hospital link road now a reality after £7m boost
EMERGENCY access to A&E in Watford is to be revolutionised after hospital chiefs were handed £7 million to pay for a new link road.
Work is expected to start next year linking the hospital directly with the road around B&Q, cutting out troublesome Vicarage Road.
Jan Filochowski, chief executive at West Herts Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “This new £7 million investment in the road infrastructure is fantastic news for the people of West Hertfordshire, as both emergency and normal access to the hospital site will be dramatically improved.”
The road, promised for years, will link the hospital with Wiggenhall Road and then on to the B&Q gyratory.
Campaigners have complained for a long time about poor access to the hospital, made worse on match days.

Friday, February 17, 2012 at 03:26 PMI wonder if the money is in the bank. In 1972, West Herts Hospital had the money to expand into the allocated ground behind it and we all know what happened then, don't we?

Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at 11:38 AMNo doubt the roadworks will cause even more delays until it is built. This should have been in place before Hemel was shut as an A&E. Disgraceful.

Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at 10:50 AMI dont think £7 million would keep an A+E department open for long. I think the people of hemel need to get over the fact that we have lost our A+E and think of the state of the art AAU unit at Watford which I have been admitted to in the past

Monday, February 13, 2012 at 10:02 PMIs this the link road to the M1 that the CE 'promised' when A&E was relocated to Watford from Hemel? It was to take the route of an old railway line if I remember correctly. Not being familiar with Watford, I wouldn't know where B&Q is. Just think how useful that £7,000,000 would have been to Hemel which is about 200 yards from a dual carriageway link to the motorway and just about half a mile from another major dual carriageway which would be useful as a 'plan B'. But that's far too easy!

Monday, February 13, 2012 at 04:28 PMStrange how a story appears all of a sudden to do with the work on this new road going to be started the week after an article on the lady dying because of delays in getting to Watford Hospital, it is a disgrace that with all the houses going up in Hemel area that we cannot have our own hospital opened up again..This sad incident I am sure will happen again ..

Monday, February 13, 2012 at 04:15 PMHemel Hospital has better infra structure, newer wards and a better location than Watford Hospital, There was even going to be road from the dual carriage into the back of the hospital. However watford was deemed better...surrounded by houses, football stadium and a one way system that at Christmas and football games gridlocks so why was the then Labour government going to keep watford open and close hemel...nothing to do with Watford a then labour strong hold and Hemel blue!!
