Praise for 'green' school runs

Schools have been applauded for urging parents to make the school run greener.

Hertfordshire County Council's Travel to School Awards 2009 celebrated schemes which encourage families to walk, cycle, use public transport and car share.

Bishop Wood Junior School in Tring was celebrating after being named as a runner up in the School Travel Champion of the Year category.

Nine other schools in the Hemel Hempstead area were given Gold Awards as a tribute to their successful travel plans - which encourage students to have safe, green journeys to school.

These were Little Gaddesden C of E, Bridgewater, Thomas Coram C of E, and Greenway First and Nursery in Berkhamsted; Dundale Primary and Nursery, and Grove Road Primary in Tring; Holtsmere End, and St Cuthbert Mayne RC in Hemel Hempstead and Kings Langley Primary.

Highways and transport boss Stuart Pile said: "I would like to thank

all the schools involved for the efforts they are making to improve both the local and global environment."

He added: "So many schools have taken these themes to heart.

"Congratulations to everyone involved."
