Police have warned drivers not to drink and drive after a man was hit by a car in Berkhamsted.

The 40-year-old was left with bruising and bleeding to his face after walking in front of a blue Renault Megane while crossing St John’s Well Lane in Berkhamsted on Thursday evening.

Police were called to the collision just after 7pm, and breathalysed but took no further action against the driver.

Sgt Peter Huffer said: “It would appear that the pedestrian had been crossing the road without paying full attention to the vehicles.

“I think he fell or stumbled into the road or maybe he tripped up.”

But he said it was a ‘timely reminder, especially as we approach Christmas’ that drivers involved in collisions or traffic offences will be breath-tested by police.

The next night, in the early hours of Saturday, police were called to Douglas Gardens, Berkhamsted, where a 26-year-old was about to drive off in a black Audi.

They breathalysed him and then arrested him for drink driving.

The man, from Woodland Close, Tring, was more than twice over the legal limit for drink driving.

He will appear at St Albans Magistrates Court on Thursday, December 6.
