Planning inspectorate called in to tackle Berkhamsted homes row
A DEVELOPER planning to build 800 homes on Green Belt land says the scheme should go ahead alongside council plans to build 1,180 homes nearby.
The firm Grand Union Investments first announced its development plan for countryside in Berkhamsted last summer.
But the scheme – which the company dubs the ‘South Berkhamsted Concept’ – has been widely opposed by people who live in the town.
GUI had previously proposed 1,000 new homes should be built on its land – but reduced this number to 800 after Berkhamsted townspeople opposed the plans in a consultation.
Dacorum Borough Council already believes that 1,180 new homes should be built elsewhere in Berkhamsted between 2006 and 2031.
But responding to its consultation on the plans, GUI said that based on 2008 population forecasts by the Office for National Statistics, that figure should actually be 2,871.
The firm’s response says council plans are confused, inconsistent, and led by political pressure rather than “a real necessity to meet the future generation’s needs.”

Friday, January 6, 2012 at 03:54 PMDon't we all just love outsiders coming in and telling us what we need? This is the organisation that believed a two way bus service should use a single track private road with two right angle bends, closely followed by the idea that living at the top of a steep hill will encourage residents to walk and cycle into the town. I think it's fair to say that as the country can't feed itself, then the proposal of using green belt land that actually grows crops every year just to make a profit on an investment by building houses and roads on it does not make long term sense for the town or country as a whole. But then, what do us residents know??
