Perfect fit at store opening

Actor Geoffrey Palmer was one of the first to try out the goods for size at the opening of the new Iain Rennie shop.

The star from As Time Goes By was in Tring on Friday (November 28) to officially open the charity store with mayor of the town Mike James.

He was also joined for the special occasion by MP for South West Herts David Gauke.

A hospice store first opened in the town's High Street in 1992 and has now relocated just yards away to the opposite side of the road.

It was long term volunteer Peggy Bainbridge who first suggested opening a fundraising shop. She used to run a market stall in aid of the good cause.

"It's incredible to see how my little market stall has grown into a chain of nine shops for the charity across the Chilterns," she said.

Known as The Harrods of Tring, the shop generates more than 165,000 each year towards the Iain Rennie Hospice at Home's nursing service, which provides home care to terminally and seriously ill patients.

Retail and trading manager Lesley Blencowe said: "We are very proud of our shop in Tring as it was the first to open, and we know that our loyal customers will find the same satisfaction in our new premises over the road.

"The staff and volunteers who work in the shop have done an amazing job over the last 16 years and we look forward to welcoming lots of new customers through the door."

She thanked volunteers who helped prepare the shop for opening and Blair Electrical of Tring for their help, as well as other businesses.

If you would like to volunteer with the charity or help raise funds call Marian or Nikki on 01442 891006.
