Open to all has a price
Old folk in sheltered housing will have to pay for their own television licences because the housing schemes have been opened up to anyone with a support need, council chiefs have revealed.
This means that not all tenants are retired or over 60 – one of the requirements to be eligible for discounted licence fees.
Dacorum Borough Council has informed those who will now have to pay up to £145.40 for a licence. The concessionary rate of £7.50 had previously been covered by the council, costing £2,257.50 in 2012. A further £16,878 was paid for 116 full price licences last year.
More council-run supported housing schemes in the area are expected to lose the concessionary right too when TV Licensing carries out reviews this year.
