A video explaining why council refuse workers sometimes cannot collect bins when temperatures plummet has been made to get the message across to householders.

The Dacorum Borough Council YouTube video, fronted by communications worker Madeleine Taggart-Smith, gives eight reasons why the 26 tonne refuse trucks cannot navigate ungritted side-roads in the worst of the wintery weather.

She reveals that if the driver does manage to get his vehicle up a slippery side road, workers then have the challenge of moving the wheelie bins – each weighing up to 15 stone – on icy and treacherous pavements.

Council communications team leader Sara Hamilton said: “We get around twice as many calls to our waste service during severe weather with residents calling to find out how their bin collection may be affected.

“We felt that a video would be a good way to explain the issues we face collecting bins in the snow, more so than words on a piece of paper.

“This is alongside regular updates on a special ‘severe weather’ section on our website, www.dacorum.gov.uk”

People can also sign up to text alerts about changes to bin collections by sending ‘DBC waste’ followed by their house number and postcode to 60777.

Updates can also be found at facebook.com/dacorum and by following @dacorumbc on Twitter.
