New look industrial estate will be 'absolutely beautiful'

Developers are planning a massive revamp of Bourne End Mills.

The 18,000sqm industrial estate, former location of Wards Saw Mill, is situated on Upper Bourne End Lane. It is home to several businesses, the majority of which are housed in buildings which are in a sub-standard condition.

But now under new plans from site owners Hilstone Property Investments, the existing run-down buildings will be upgraded or replaced, with several environmental improvements also being made to the site.

These will include the creation of a community green with a pond, and the adding of more trees and hedgerows to the area.

There will also be improved access to the site for pedestrians and vehicles, and the updating of the Bourne Gutter could help alleviate flood risk.

Site manager David Dawson, said: "At the moment it's an eyesore. It's going to be vastly improved, and made a lot nicer. It's going to be absolutely beautiful."

Despite lying within the Green Belt, the changes made to the site would seem to satisfy relevant planning policies.

An exhibition at Bourne End Village Hall attracted around 50 Bourne End residents and tenants.

Although receiving support from nearly all those attending, some concerns were raised. The main concern was that there should be no vehicular access from Bourne End Lane.

Neil Aitchison, of Aitchison Rafferty, who are acting on behalf of Hilstone, said: "The residents raised some interesting points of concern which we are fully reporting to our client before the application is submitted."

The formal plans will be submitted to Dacorum Borough Council early this year.
