New hotline to report abuse of elderly people
ABUSERS of the elderly in Dacorum can now be shopped to the authorities via a new hotline.
Victims, their families or carers will be able to report any possible abuse when the phoneline goes live on Monday, April 14.
Herts County Council has teamed up with charity Action on Elder Abuse and providers of residential care to run the scheme initially as a pilot for six months.
Sally Newton, cabinet member for adult care and health, said: "We are encouraging anyone who might be concerned about abuse of an elderly person to get in touch through this helpline.
"Information from the public is crucial to help save someone from further harm.
"The victims, their families or carers should have no fear about using the helpline.
"People can call in confidence and all reports of abuse will be taken seriously."
The scheme will also run in Watford and Three Rivers.
Action on Elder Abuse is the UK's most prominent charity concerned with abuse of vulnerable older people. Spokesman Rosanna Thirlow said: "This helpline tackles the major problem of how vulnerable people may complain safely and without fear."
The hotline number is 0808 8088141.
