Man charged for arson garage blaze

A man has been charged with arson and criminal damage following a garage blaze.

Crowds gathered as three fire engines rushed to extinguish a fire at a residential garage at the bottom of Kitsbury Road just before 7pm last Tuesday (August 26).

Police have since charged 29-year-old Darren Kay with arson and criminal damage.

He is due to appear in front of West Herts magistrates this Thursday (September 4).

During the fire diverted traffic clogged up the narrow streets surrounding the High Street, which was blocked off.

The police helicopter was sent up and Kay, of no fixed abode, was later arrested.

A man was taken to Watford General Hospital with minor injuries.

One eye witness, commuter Corinne Deasey, said: "I was walking down Berkhamsted High Street when suddenly I was surrounded by smoke which made my eyes water, I had to cover my mouth to stop myself from coughing – the smell was intense.

"Smoke was filling the whole street and I couldn't see to the end of the road. I looked up and saw smoke pumping in the air.

"Within minutes it became thicker and darker. As I walked away quickly a helicopter appeared overhead. I think that the emergency services reacted quickly and dealt with the manner in a professional and safe manner."
