Man found dead in hospital toilet

A man found dead in a toilet cubicle at Watford Hospital may have been there for three days.

The man, a 22 year old from St Albans, was reported missing days before he was discovered by two members of staff at around 5am yesterday (Wednesday, May 6).

He had been admitted on Saturday (May 2) as a medical emergency, but had discharged himself later the same day against the advice of clinical staff.

His family were informed and he was reported to police as missing.

His body was found in a locked shower and toilet cubicle within the acute admissions unit - there were signs on the door to say it was out of use due to a drainage problem.

Hospital spokesman Eileen Whitehouse confirmed that West Herts Hospitals NHS Trust had conducted an initial investigation into the 'tragic event'.

She said the hospital was working with police and added: "We would like to express our sympathy to the family at this distressing time."

Herts Police said it was not treating the death as suspicious.

The new acute admissions unit, which opened just three months ago, is attached to casualty and deals with emergency cases.

It's opening co-incided with the closure of Hemel Hempstead A&E.
