MCHG Lions bookshop in Marlowes Shopping Centre, Hemel Hempstead, celebrates takings of 50,000.

A charity bookshop has celebrated raking in £50,000 for good causes.

Hemel Hempstead’s Lions Club celebrated the milestone with a get-together on Friday.

The shop, inside the Marlowes Shopping Centre, has sold around 100,000 books since opening its doors in April 2011. Around 1,500 page turners fly off the shelves each week.

Club president Barbara Daniels said: “I think we have got a pretty good customer base – they bring books in and then they pick books to take home.”

The money raised has helped 33 local charities and seven international causes. To apply for funding, good causes should initially write to Barbara Daniels, 22 Gatecroft, HP3 GNA.
