Judge spares young man after child porn admission
A young Hemel Hempstead manwho was caught in possession of indecent images of children has escaped going to prison.
Instead Thomas Green, 23, of Milton Court, has been given a three community order and the chance to go on a sex offenders treatment programme.
At St Albans Crown Court on Friday, Green pleaded guilty to two charges of having images of children – both still and moving – on his computer.
Prosecutor Beverley Cripps told how in 2011 police went to the defendant’s home and seized computer equipment which was later analysed.
The images found showed young boys under 14 and during a police interview Green admitted receiving the material via internet chatrooms.
Miss Nerida Harford-Bell, defending, said: “He takes his position seriously and regrets his actions.”
She said a place had been found for Green to go on a sex offenders treatment programme.
“He wishes to avail himself of any help he can get,” she said.
Passing sentence, Judge Michael Baker QC said a small proportion of the material had been of the very worst kind and he said the offences crossed the threshold which would normally warrant a custodial sentence.
However, he said he would pass a sentence which allowed Green to keep his liberty and attend the treatment programme.
Green was placed on supervision for three years and ordered to pay costs of £1,100.
