When Christmas decorations come down on Twelfth Night, that’s when members of the 1st Berkhamsted Scouts go into action for their biggest fundraising drive of the year.

A team of nearly 30 scouts and family members collected up some 800 trees from houses throughout the town, raising on average more than £5 a tree.

More than 4,000 leaflets were delivered across the town before the volunteer collectors were then set to work.

Trees were loaded into vans and trailers and taken away to be broken up and re-cycled as wood-chippings.

More than half of the money collected was gift-aided, and the cash will be used for maintenance and improvement works to the group’s HQ in Chapel Street and for new scouting equipment.

Key to the success of the scheme are the organisational skills of group treasurer Anwen Crosher and husband Andy.

The Scouts are supported by S.Dell & Sons and Berkhamsted School who loan vans for the collection day.

Anwen said: “This was a great result for us.

“Since we started five years ago, the number of trees collected has increased steadily every year from about 100 in 2008 to about 800 this year”

Group scout leader Geoff Halls added, “We are very grateful for the support of the residents of Berkhamsted, who seem to appreciate the service we provide.”
