Old folk donned their cracker hats and got into the festive spirit at Age UK Dacorum’s Christmas party.

The charity is hosting three parties this year in the run up to the big day.

On Friday, a total of 230 guests from the good cause’s day clubs and friendship teas enjoyed a three course lunch.

Entertainment was provided by Bernie Kelly, who got the whole room singling and laughing, Hemel Hempstead MP Mike Penning was there, and Santa popped in to give out gifts that had been donated by the people of Dacorum.

Charity spokesman Michelle Law said: “The Christmas parties are a highlight of the year.

“It is very rewarding to see happy faces, especially when we know that the person might be celebrating Christmas day alone. This time of year can be very lonely and emotionally difficult.

“Age UK Dacorum’s ambition is to help make later life a fulfilling and enjoyable experience and we try to achieve that by providing our range of services and clubs as well as advising on how to stay warm and keep well.”

A lunch is being held at Bovingdon’s Little Hay Golf course today for 67 people who have benefitted from having either a volunteer befriender or a telephone befriender from the charity.

A get together lunch for carers will be held at Shendish Manor next Tuesday, with 50 guests. It gives carers a chance to relax and be looked after.

Michelle said: “We couldn’t put on the events without the lovely gifts donated by the wonderful Dacorum community, and our amazing team of volunteers who give up many hours each week the help at our clubs and schemes. They are the strength behind our charity.

“Thanks to all our volunteers, and to KPMG and HCPA Care Cadets who gave their time so generously on Friday.”

The charity based in Half Moon Yard, High Street, Hemel Hempstead, does not receive government funding so relies on local support to keep going.
