Hospital below average in poll

THE trust running hospitals in west Herts has scored below average in a survey asking patients if they would recommend the service to friends and family.

West Herts Hospitals NHS Trust was given a score of plus 42 compared with a regional average of plus 62, calculated by subtracting negative responses from the number of positive ones.

More than 22,000 patients from the 46 acute hospitals across the east of England and the Midlands were asked at the end of their treatment: ‘How likely is it that you would recommend this service to friends and family?’

Scores ranged from plus 29 to plus 89.

Dr Stephen Dunn, director of policy and strategy at NHS Midlands and East, said: “Those who are towards the bottom need to understand why and do something about it. This is not a name and shame exercise as all hospitals had positive scores and there are examples of excellent care in them all, it is about improvement across all our hospitals.”

Natalie Forest, director of nursing at the trust, said: “The trust is very disappointed with the first results of the new test. These results do not compare with other sources used to measure patient satisfaction, such as the National Inpatient Survey results and the comments posted by patients on the NHS Choices website.

“The trust has already seen an improvement to plus 58 for June, which is close to the national average, and is anticipating continued improved scores as this new data collection process becomes more embedded within the trust’s working methods.”
