Hospice patron pulled into Savile scandal
A hospice has said it is ‘dismayed’ by developments in the Jimmy Savile abuse scandal, which has seen one of its patrons come under fire.
Esther Rantzen, who has been a champion of the Iain Rennie Hospice at Home and more recently Iain Rennie Grove House Hospice for the last 12 years, has been criticised for failing to act on rumours that the DJ was abusing young girls.
A spokesman for the Tring-based hospice said: “We are dismayed to read the recent rumours and allegations and will be monitoring the situation very closely.
“Until the situation is clearer we feel it would be unfair to make a judgement by formally disassociating ourselves from Esther and removing her from our list of patrons at this stage.”
The ChildLine founder has defended her actions saying a junior researcher told her about the rumours but at that stage there was no specific allegation.
Last week it emerged that Savile, of Jim’ll Fix It fame, may have preyed on young patients at Aylesbury’s Stoke Mandeville Hopital.
Scotland Yard is now pursuing more than 300 lines of inquiry involving 40 potential victims.
