High-tech approach to domestic violence

SPECIAL police squads armed with video camera headsets will be on call to help domestic violence victims for the rest of the festive period.

The teams, specially trained to deal with domestic disputes, will use the recording equipment to gather vital evidence at violent home incidents over the New Year.

Detective Inspector Kirsten Bonner said: "(The festive season] can add to the stress of a volatile relationship and traditionally at this time of year, we tend to see an increase in domestic violence."

As well as video gear, the domestic violence police teams will also carry evidence gathering kits and phones for victims so they can call 999 in an emergency.

The teams will also have designated police patrol cars so they can reach all domestic violence incidents over the busy New Year period.

In between incidents, the teams will work to support known victims of domestic violence in West Hertfordshire, as well as monitoring the behaviour of known offenders.

The special measures, to last until Sunday, January 6, are being funded as part of the Government's Domestic Violence Enforcement Campaign.

For help or information on domestic violence issues, call the Hertfordshire Domestic Violence Helpline on 08 088 088 088.
