Give up your car for a day
A green pressure group is organising a town's first ever car free day on Tuesday, June 22, this year.
Transition Town Berkhamsted has already signed up the local town council to the event which aims to encourage people to go about their daily business without using private cars.
Cllr Peter Matthews, who admitted to being jet-lagged from a recent long flight, told last Monday's annual meeting of Berkhamsted Town Council that it would be possible to "support it and go a bit further."
He said people could also be persuaded to use less energy in the home, by switching off electrical devices instead of leaving them on stand-by.
Cllr Garrick Stevens said the council could put up notices and others said schools could be encouraged to join in.
It was also agreed that — as far as possible — town councillors and town council staff should support the initiative by not using their cars on that day.
Transition Town Berkhamsted hopes the event will make the town a more pleasant place to live.
