The wait was finally over for The Cavendish School pupils as they found out how they had done in their GCSE exams.

There were a number of top performances, and headteacher Sue Forde said: “The school has done really well.

“We are a bit disappointed by the grade boundaries changing for the English because that has dropped our results, as I am sure it has with most schools.

“The disappointing side of that is that it affects the lives of the students standing here in this hall.

“But we are really pleased overall with the students – they have worked so hard this year and the staff have done an amazing job with them.

“As any teacher will tell you, the joy of seeing the students open their envelopes with that big smile on their faces just makes me want to cry.

“It is fantastic to see, so we are really, really pleased with them. A big congratulations to all the students.”

Michael Ferguson was one of the pupils who was delighted with his results, picking up one A*, seven As and two Bs.

He said: “I did better than I was hoping for because I thought I had flunked maths.

“I was really nervous but I’m very happy with how I have done.”

Jessica Byrne also did well, bagging two A* grades, seven As, a B and an E.

She said: “I’m really, really happy with that. I wasn’t nervous at all because I had revised hard for all the exams and I think the hard work paid off.”

Fellow pupil Samiyah Begum, who attained one A*, two As, four Bs and two Cs, added: “I’m really happy because I think I over-achieved. I was really happy when I opened my envelope.”
