Freezer sparks house fire

A faulty fridge-freezer sparked a blaze at a Hemel Hempstead home.

The fire broke out in the kitchen of a house in Ebberns Road at about 6.30pm last night (Tuesday).

Firefighters called to the property found no-one in but fire in the kitchen and smoke throughout the home.

They tackled the fire and rescued a cat found cowering behind a bed in an upstairs bedroom.

The homeowners, who had been shopping at a supermarket, returned and were said to be very shaken by the damage to their home.

Watch Commander Chris Williams from Hemel Hempstead Fire Station said: "There was extensive damage to the kitchen and smoke damage to the rest of the house."

Watch Commander Williams also called on residents to make sure they have working smoke alarms in their homes.

For information on how to get a free smoke alarm and free home fire safety check, call Hemel Hempstead Fire Station 01442 265028.
