Fire still burning despite the rain

The downpour over the weekend didn’t help put out a fire on the border of Hemel Hempstead.

Gusts of wind on Saturday and Sunday scattered hot embers around the recycling centre where a mound of wood waste has been burning for more than two weeks.

A second fire crew was called to the blaze in Appspond Lane to help their colleagues cope with the problem.

Wind blowing smoke on to nearby roads when the fire started on Saturday, November 10 was a major factor in the closure of the nearby A414 and A405.

This wasn’t the case at at the weekend so no traffic restrictions were put in place.

The fire crews quickly extinguished the smouldering embers.

Hertfordshire Fire Service is keeping the fire under control until it burns out, but no one knows how long it will take.
