Dog saves mum and girl from fire

A Kings Langley mum and her five-year-old daughter were saved from a house fire by their dog today.

Suzanne Webster and her daughter Francesca were in an attic bedroom at their home in Belham Road this morning when a fire started in their ground-floor kitchen.

The fire could have spread within minutes but the pair upstairs were alerted to it by their pet dog.

The Golden Doodle made a racket downstairs by pacing up and down the hallway after seeing and smelling smoke.

Suzanne said: "I could hear him getting agitated – I knew something weird was going on.

"I thought we had an intruder."

When the mum came down she found smoke clogging up the kitchen.

She opened a back door to let some air in but then saw flames in a corner of the room - crucially she then closed the kitchen door to stop the fire spreading.

After running upstairs to get her daughter from the attic, she ran out into the street to get help from neighbours.

Firefighters were called to the semi-detached house at around 8.20am and used a hose to extinguish the fire by around 8.45am.

The fire is believed to have started in an extension cable that was left on and bunched up in a corner of the kitchen.

Kings Langley fire station sub-officer James Todd said at the scene: "When using extension cords you must pull the whole lead out of the drum because when the wires are left wound up they can overheat."

No one was hurt in the fire at Kings Langley but the kitchen and its contents were badly damaged by the smoke and flames.
