A far-flung fundraiser has raised almost £1,000 for the Stroke Association by cycling to Berlin – and then taking part in a marathon in the German capital.

Craig Stewart, 30, wanted to help the charity as his grandad Alan, of St Albans Hill, Hemel Hempstead, suffered a stroke 14 years ago.

He said: “Before the stroke he was quite a successful businessman, travelling the world. But it was quite a bad stroke and since then he has needed 24-hour care.

“He lost his speech and his ability to walk, and went from being this really forthright, fatherly figure to just sitting in a wheelchair. I was just 15 at the time.”

Craig pedalled for around 100 miles a day for a week and had just a day to rest before his marathon on Sunday, September 29.

He told the Gazette there were many times he got lost on his way to Berlin, using only an iPhone GPS device to navigate. He also fell off his bike and down a hill at one point.

He said: “It was a mega challenge and at times it seemed very scary. The thought of my grandad spurred me on to the end.”
