Conmen rob woman, 81

A trio of fraudsters stole cash from a pensioner after they tricked their way into her home.

The 81 year old allowed the men inside her Boxmoor home in Hemel Hempstead on Saturday (January 3) when they claimed to be from the waterboard.

They said there had been a flood near her house and they would need to check her water system.

When they left the property at around 3.30pm there was cash missing.

One of the men is described as white with a slim build, short brown hair, aged between 20 and 30, with an Irish accent.

The two men accompanying him are described as white with short brown hair.

Police are connecting the theft to two similar incidents that took place in Kings Langley on the same day.

Three men were reported trying to talk their way into another 81 year old woman's home at around 4pm.

She initially allowed them in, but asked them to leave after challenging them about the nature of their visit.

A 74 year old man in the same street was also approached by a man claiming to be from the waterboard, but he was suspicious and turned him away.

Herts Police would like anyone with information to call the non-emergency number on 0845 33 00 222.

Officers have also offered the following advice to people answering the door to people they do not know:

*Always put the door chain on before you open the door.

*If they claim to be from a utility company check their ID card, find the number in the phone book and telephone their company.

Genuine callers will be happy to wait while you make the check, but do not use the number given on their ID card.

*If you still feel uneasy, do not feel pressurised to let them in. Ask them to come back later and arrange for someone to be with you.
