Closed road to be reinstated seven years after Buncefield disaster

Work will start this summer to put a stretch of road back in to action that has been closed for seven years.

Part of Three Cherry Trees Lane - between Green Lane and Buncefield Lane - was shut off after the Buncefield explosion in 2005 and kept closed because of a row over who should pay for the repair work needed.

The key commuter route for those visiting the Maylands business park is currently fenced off preventing access for both motorists and pedestrians.

But Herts Highways has confirmed that work will finally begin this summer after Total - one of the oil depot operators - agreed to pay the £200,000 needed to make it safe.

The cash will cover removing and replacing contaminated soil, replacing much of the carriageway and installing surface water drainage.

In the early hours of December 11, 2005, a massive explosion caused by the vapour from an overflowing storage tank sent the depot up in flames.
