Three good causes have joined forces in a bid to reach out to more people.
Hemel Hempstead’s Salvation Army has teamed up with Mencap and Christians Against Poverty to help people over a cup of coffee.
Mencap is providing volunteers to give a helping hand running the Salvation Army’s Thursday afternoon coffee lounge session while representatives from Christians Against Poverty will be there to give advice to those struggling with debt.
Tim Johnson, from the Salvation Army in Waterhouse Street, said: “It gives Mencap members a chance to develop skills in hospitality, it’s a new venue for Christians Against Poverty to be available to folks who might need their help and we are delighted that we are extending the use of the hall and being more available to town centre people and the people who live there.”
The Salvation Army already runs its coffee lounge every weekday morning and if the afternoon session, running from 2pm to 4pm, is a hit it could be extended to other days.
The three-way partnership came about after Liz King from Mencap approached the Salvation Army earlier this year.
The centre also hosts a lunch club, where people can take in their own food or purchase goods there, on Thursdays from 12.15pm to 2pm.
