Canal art makes a splash
Imagination and creativity brightened up the Grand Union Canal with the launch of floating sculptures made by Berkhamsted schoolchildren last Thursday (June 26).
After months of hard work, more than 100 Berkhamsted residents watched students from Bridgewater and Thomas Coram School release five sculptures they made out of recyclable material.
The pupils designed and made a variety of sculptures including islands, a turtle and the Titanic, which were floated on the stretch of canal at the bottom of Castle Street, Berkhamsted.
The project was organised by Re:Create, which is an art centre at the back of the Town Hall.
With thanks to a Hertfordshire Visual Arts Forum (HVAF) grant, Rose Scarborough, artist and Re:Create manager, was able to run a series of workshops for 10 to 13 year olds from both schools.
The youngsters were presented with a mound of recyclable material and had to work out which did and did not float.
Items that did not float were experimented with and were adapted to make them buoyant.
Rose said: "It was an excellent day.
"I was very impressed with the children's imagination, they really picked up on the brief."
Teenagers from Ashlyns School filmed the project and will edit the footage together ready for an exhibition later this year.
During the summer holidays Re:Create have organised a number of three-day courses including animation workshops, paper making and fashion courses.
