Call to consult on waste site plan for village's old airfield

A Bovingdon resident is calling for the county council to consult with the whole village about a potential site for a recycling centre.

Penny Misselbrook says a waste facility on Bovingdon airfield would have a massive impact not just on residents in the immediate vicinity but the whole village.

She wants Hertfordshire County Council to contact every resident in Bovingdon for their opinions on the site being suggested as a base for recycling.

The airfield is on a list of more than 100 sites across the county put forward as potential recycling plants to help reduce the amount of rubbish going to landfill.

Miss Misselbrook lives little more than 100m from the airfield. However, she only became aware of the council's current public consultation when her neighbour, who lives within the council's consultation area, informed her.

She said: "It is completely unsatisfactory. I think the rest of the village would like to hear about it. I have contacted the council to ask why we have not been consulted - apparently we are just outside the 100m consultation area.

"I think they should be consulting the whole village because of the implications and the increase in traffic."

However, the council said it would be too expensive to write to all residents living close to every potential site listed.

Spokesman John Camp said: "We have more than 100 sites on the list around the county and have written to people within a set distance of those sites. It would be a prohibitively expensive exercise to write to all residents of the individual settlements in each case, which is why we have sent copies of the documents to all local libraries and council offices, issued press releases and advertisements.

"Anybody can respond to the consultation if they wish, whether they have received a letter or not. The official closing date is Monday, March 10."
