Bert Inward

Nominated by Jacqueline Stafford

Dacorum's oldest volunteer and founder of two successful homeless charities will let nothing stop him from giving to others.

Put forward by Jacqueline Stafford, who describes her nominee as "an amazing person," inspirational Bert Inward is the man who recognised the problem of homelessness in Dacorum.

In 1993, Bert inspired the launch of Rent Aid - a charity that helps homeless people rent private accommodation by paying rent in advance and giving a guarantee.

By March 1995 Dacorum Rent Aid had its first client and has helped hundreds of people since.

He went on to launch Dacorum Emergency Night Shelter, better known as DENS.

Bert may be in his ninth decade, but that has not stopped him from being a Trustee of Dacorum Rent Aid – currently working with staff on an event for Homelessness week in January 2008.
