Ancient custom in memory of Frank

An ancient practice will take place in Kings Langley this month in memory of a popular local historian.

Parish councillor Alan Anderson is calling on villagers to take part in a nine mile walk around the parish boundary, in tribute to late history society chairman Frank Davies.

The ancient custom, known as Beating the Bounds, was practiced to identify an area and to pray for protection and blessings for the land.

It is still used today in many English parishes as a way of strengthening the community.

Alan said: "At a History Society committee meeting before Christmas, it was Frank Davies' idea to resume the practice.

"I would very much like a group of us to do so in his memory."

Mr Davies, who chaired the Kings Langley Local History and Museum Society for a decade and was a director of Dacorum Heritage Trust, died in January, aged 71.

Beating the Bounds will take place on Sunday, April 27, starting at 11am outside All Saints Church in Kings Langley.

Anyone who would like to take part must register in advance with Alan Anderson on 01923 262884.
